maybe it’s my current accessibility to the sea, but this week’s color story is all about living the life aquatic (one of my favorite wes anderson films, too, btw). there are many shades of aquatic, ranging from turquoise blues to deep-sea darker hues and they’re all quite soothing, and sometimes they even feel a little exotic to me. like a trip to a foreign port, an afternoon in a Moroccan riad, or a sail through the Mediterranean, these blue jewel tones just exude calm, but also often take a dramatic, sometimes stormy turn. here’s a few of my favorite blue hues and some decor accessories to get you there — and if you like this vibe, you might like to check out my aqualand pinboard for more. bon voyage to the life aquatic.

pantone color of the year: classic blue.

it’s that time of year again, and pantone has announced their color of 2020 — classic blue! they have said “It’s a color that anticipates what’s going to happen next,” said Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the pantone Color Institute, which selects the Color of the Year. “What’s the future going to bring as we move into the evening hours?” i love the idea of that, and lately, i’ve really noticed the color of the sky as the sun sets in laguna is exactly that — a beautiful shade of deep blue. blue is such a versatile color — it can be dramatic to decorate with and it can be really bold (think painting your walls solid navy blue!) or if you think of a seaside cottage, blue can be really very calming, and quite traditional, too. here’s a look at my take on the pantone color of the year.

pink wall and ceiling paint in vintage modern dining room with marble table and gold wall art. / sfgirlbybay

hello friends. i just want to address for a moment how frightening i know this virus is for all of us, worldwide, and while i am taking it quite seriously, i am also trying to remain optimistically cautious. if you can, as they are asking us to, please stay home. i know this is not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. i know this is not a luxury or even close for most people, especially those with kids. i think this is a time for family and friends to bring comfort and calm as best we can, and that we try to share lots of kindness and understanding because everyone reacts to this kind of thing differently and is affected in ways we aren’t always aware of. we’re in this together. i’m going to try and take comfort in simple beauty, good books, quiet and just enjoy old school pleasures. and at least reading blogs is safe, right? be healthy. thinking of all of you. let’s look at some colorful, cheerful spaces today, shall we?

xo, victoria

  1. this is such a pretty pairing of pale pink walls, yellow artwork and a dreamy chocolate brown fireplace mantel. i love how ornate and victorian the room is but with such a modern twist.
  2. elle decor featured this very bold room with — wait for it — hardwood floors painted sunny yellow! but again this pairing with pink somehow works together and doesn’t overwhelm me. i’m not sure if i could live with it long term, but i’d sure like to visit for a while.
  3. i love the look of foraged florals and this beautiful floral arrangement of blushing brides and what look to be palm dates is disheveled in the very best way. i guess we can still get out and forage in nature for beauty like this, so keep your pruning shears at the ready (these small ones are my favorite) for what you find out there.
  4. i love the styling of this little nook by @kate.lavie. that vintage credenza is crazy good and everything is scaled to perfection. a lovely little composition, indeed. while we’re holed up at home, maybe it’s a good time to restyle our own little nooks and nitches.
  5. i just adore the color palette of this vintage ceramic collection. looks like a dreamy Neopolitan cornucopia of pink, brown, yellow and white. i often find great vintage mid-century modern ceramics on etsy if you find yourself on the hunt.
  6. amara paint created this color pairing of a buttery yellow and pale pink and it looks smashing together. i think it adds such an interesting dimension to the space painting the walls two complementary shades.
  7. could you go full on mustard yellow walls? normally i might say no way, but this little bedroom nook looks quite cozy and i love that splash of hot pink in the woven bed throw. bold, but oh so good.
  8. this is a very charming children’s room, and i love the sweet fly to Tokyo poster print which is from fine little day. there are some great, layered textures here — from the shag rug to the heavy draperies and pinstripe duvet. adorable, and yet still quite sophisticated.

i first landed on this very inspiring and instagram worthy account when i spied @timlabenda’s beautiful bedroom. it’s hard to miss a headboard-like wall of white birds on a lovely green background and it turns out it’s Gucci’s Heron Print wallpaper which makes perfect sense because it’s boldly fabulous. @timlabenda is an Interior and fashion Consultant, Designer & Decorator and also a sometime personal fashion blogger with a keen, clever sense of style over at @hnns.vncnt. he shares quite a bit of his incredible berlin home on his account and i’m sharing just a small sampling of how stunning it is — it was hard to narrow down from all the gorgeous shots, so please forgive the photo overload, sit back and enjoy.

plum, purple, mauve, lavender — whatever you prefer to call it, i’m seeing these pretty jewel tones popping up everywhere. from fashionistas to fainting sofas, purple would appear to be very en vogue. shades of pale purple, eggplant and mauve paired with soft hues of gray, and a sneaky hint of amber gold they make a very soothing, and yet bold and dramatic decor statement. wanna get the look — simply swap out your current throws, pillow cushions or even an area rug with this trending color palette and you are good to go. this week’s color story is all about the jewel tones.

introducing trove, by crate and barrel.

as a very long time fan of Crate and Barrel, i am most excited to share their brand new collection with you — meet Trove, Crate and Barrel’s new exclusive collection inspired by modern design cities — think of sunrise hues and an extra saturated color palette with the energy of a fresh new day. and the collection is flexible enough to work in every room — including petite living rooms and dining spaces like mine, because the Trove collection is modular, modern, and perfect for small-space living. the Trove collection reminds me of favorite cities i’ve traveled to, like Luis Barragán’s geometric bold colors in mexico city, and gaudi’s clever shapes and pastels all over barcelona and introduces us to eye-catching shapes and colors like punched-up pastels for maximum style impact — paired together to give a room a uniquely eclectic pop.

I chose a dramatic mixture of pieces from the Trove collection to share with you — from the more neutral, go-anywhere pieces like the Nero White Marble Accent Table and Nero White Oval Coffee Table with their trumpet table bases of brass-coated cast aluminum tapers supporting a gorgeous top of white marble with beautiful grey veining that’s beautifully unique to each piece. and the Rondure Globe Floor Lamp with its wonderfully speckled base and brass iron rod — the column of terrazzo provides the perfect foundation for the art deco-inspired globe lamp with its softly diffused light — pair with the coordinating Lachlin Table Lamp to complete the look.

for my tabletop, i chose a whole cornucopia of colorful Coimbra tableware from the Trove collection — my favorite mix and match look, perfect for summertime dining indoors or out. there’s a huge mix of Trove stoneware to choose from in reactive glaze washes — i chose the Coimbra Blue Large Tray in a deep shade of blue finished with a softly curved lip and rounded corners, it’s the perfect platter to serve crudités, kebabs or individual desserts. i paired these with the other pieces in the Coimbra dinnerware and serveware collection for a modern, multicolor table. made in portugal, the Coimbra serveware collection is a Crate and Barrel exclusive. add to that the Coimbra Medium Tray, Coimbra Oval Tray both in a pretty pink blush, a mix of both the Coimbra Mini Bowl in yellow and the Coimbra Mini Bowl in blue — perfect for nuts or desserts, and the Coimbra Yellow Dip Bowl to serve sauces, salsa or dips.

introducing the Trove collection by Crate and Barrel / @sfgirlbybay

i’ve accessorized the entire look with a mix of vases from Trove’s collection made by talented artisans and glazed by hand, coating the earthenware in matte finished, modern shades. you can display the vases on their own, or grouped with the other colorful totem vases. i chose a mix: the Dagmar Pink Totem Vase with its bold silhouette with playful yet sculptural shape; the Eleonora Mint Totem Vase for its pretty tiered curves, the Dorothea Orange Totem Vase with its a geometric silhouette and lastly, the beautiful Olympia Tall Pink Vase with Handles — the classic amphora vase with right angles and deco curves.

all of this wonderfully colorful mix was placed on top of the Spence 90″ Table Runner in an aqua weave bordered in stripes of goldenrod at either end — all of the pure cotton dyed and weaved by hand. then for a bold splash, i added the Maxwell Yellow Round Easy Care Placemats, embossed to look like real leather, but super easy to care for. and lastly, i paired the placemats with the Tissi Blue Mist Napkins, with finely stitched edging in lush teal borders, a square of seafoam, creating a napkin with a modern, tonal look, and the pure cotton napkins clean up easily in the washing machine and dryer. and naturally, we need some dishes to dine from, so i chose the Coimbra Mint Dinner Plate
and paired it with the Coimbra Blue Salad Plate for an interesting paired contrast. summer decorating and dining at its most fun!

here’s a few more of my favorite pieces from the Trove collection: Dark Green Ingrid Bowl; Lachlin Table Lamp; Strummer Double Old Fashioned Pink 13oz. glasses; Jacque Console Table; and the 8×10 Touffe Rug. you can check out the entire Trove collection online at Crate and Barrel.

this week’s instagram worthy feed is so wonderfully colorful! it’s also design at its very best — unique, unexpected, and beautifully executed. meet @gisbertpoeppler, a berlin-based interior designer, offering a deep knowledge of architecture, interior design, and custom-designed furnishing all in one boutique full-service architectural studio. the very contemporary and bold use of color is so forward-thinking and pairs so well with the older European architecture, giving these spaces a whole new life — vintage-modern design at its best. and his kitchen happens to be one of my all-time favorites with the antique white cabinet over the modern green cabinetry. for more colorful inspiration be sure to follow @gisbertpoeppler and have a visit to their website.

we see a lot of white and bright kitchens out there, like yesterday’s beautiful kitchen from our food stories. but what about the dark side? i love a dark and dramatic kitchen. i’ve only gone partway there, with my black smeg fridge and appliances, but i’ve yet to pull the trigger on a totally black space. but look how sophisticated these kitchens look? all could take is a can of paint (my go-to black paint is benjamin moore’s onyx black) or perhaps you just tile your backsplash with some very black beauties like these from clé tiles. or, you can just chicken out and find yourself some black crockery, kitchen counter appliances, or the ultimate black smeg!

friday finds - the bright and beautiful / sfgirlbybay

i’ve really gone for the bold and the beautiful for this week’s friday finds and why not? it’s spring of course, so why not go a little nuts and add a few bits of color around the house? even if you’re just adding some pretty cut poppies to your table or those inexpensive trader joe’s daffodils, bringing in a bit of color really can lift your mood. have a wonderfully colorful weekend, everyone.

xo, victoria

  1. honestly, i could probably never be quite this brave, but i can still utterly admire this bold, modern look from @piotrparadowskistudio. it’s a chic apartment of a young creative couple in Warsaw-Powiśle with an eclectic and very cool mix of designer pieces from the ‘60s and ’70s. so groovy!
  2. sometimes all you need is a colorful bowl of vintage matchbooks to brighten up a coffee table or credenza. they just don’t make these old matchbooks the way they used to but whenever i see some in my travels i always grab a couple to add to my collection. i find some old matchbooks on etsy or the flea markets from time to time, too.
  3. i love the idea of this floating glass display case from @femte.til.venstre and the way she’s painted the inside cabinet to add a touch of color really makes her collections stand out proudly. i think you could find an old cabinet like this on etsy or your local flea market or salvage yards and make a fun diy project out of it.
  4. remodelista shared this beautiful new Showroom Concept in new york’s West Village. it began as a ‘pandemic lockdown project’ started by French-born, NYC-based architect Olivier Garcé, an apartment-as-gallery collaboration with furniture designer Ian Felton. so very fabulous. and he’s just bought an apartment in lisbon with the same genius idea in mind. more to come on that!
  5. sometimes all you need to take your bathroom style to the next level is to hang a pretty bathrobe, such as this one at marston house’s winter home in Provence featured on the maryn (a wonderful blog if you’ve never seen it). i love that feminine and pretty bit of pastel color. for the full home tour pop on over to their site.
  6. another idea for adding unique style and a pop of color is a collection of vintage pottery. i have quite the collection and it keeps on growing! you can never have too many unique handmade pieces of pottery in my humble opinion. i love the collections from sunday shop, one of my favorite homeware stores in new orleans and have ordered quite a few pieces from them since they ship — hurrah!
  7. here’s a beautiful example of adding some bold color this time by simply upholstering a cushion for a vintage mid-century danish modern ercol-style sofa and chair. it’s such a bright and cheerful look created just by adding a few new fabrics — simple and yet so effective.
  8. how do you go about modernizing a 250-year-old villa? you might add an incredible tufted orange sofa to start! this is casa mina — a new design project from @quintana.partners — to see more of it click and swipe left.

color story: darker days / sfgirlbybay

we’ve been pretty ‘light-hearted’ around here lately — i blame the warm summer vibes! so for today’s color story, i’m headed back to the dark side. i like going there on occasion and especially when i find some darkly dramatic decor filling up my pinterest feed. some of these rooms have really gone to the extreme — painting their walls richly black, but then adding all black furniture and bedding too. i’m not sure i could personally go there, but it does have a certain soothing, serene appeal, doesn’t it? i feel like i could dream for days in some of these all-black bedrooms. don’t be afraid to darken your doorstep — after all, it’s only paint!
